Historical geography and issues of polyethnicity of the Cossacks

It is rather difficult to understand the complexity and diversity of Cossack enclaves that have been forming a unique cultural-historical community on the territory of Russia without considering the factors of ethnic and territorial component. Specifically, the issues of Cossack ethnicity and distinctive features of life and development of the Cossacks’ territories had long been the essence of the conflict and confrontation between the Cossacks and the state. The state introduced multiple reforms and even revolutionary changes in respect of the territories inhabited by the Cossacks to integrate them into other social strata and groups. Not always these attempts have proved to be effective and successful. They had a different character and direction vector. At the same time, some important patterns have been revealed in this issue. Thus, the issue of historical geography and ethnogenesis attracts more and more attention of domestic and foreign researchers – the Cossacks experts, surging to the key positions in historical studies.
