Penance in the system of church discipline in the XVIII - early XIX centuries

Orthodox epitimia practice in Russia in the late XVIII – early XIX centuries had its own characteristics that distinguish it from the subsequent period. By the 80s of the XVIII century in the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church remained only the imposition of penances on evading confession, guilty of adultery and persons and sent by a secular court. In addition to the standard, already established practices used in penances, there were so-called "monastic works" included in the penance, which had gender characteristics. This measure of spiritual punishment ceases to exist by the beginning of the XIX century.

Charity work of Russian Orthodox church in the period of Patriarchate of Alexy II in 1990-2008

This article analyzes the process of social service of The Russian Orthodox Church at the turn of XX-XXI century. Besides the specificity of Church charity in the 90s and 2000s is shown, problematic moments in carrying of the Church of his social service are discovered. It is important to consider that by 1990 its resources were quite limited, because the Church needed to finally rebuild its destroyed institutions after the Soviet persecution, however, since the 2000s in her charitable activities, a certain rise is planned. As a whole, taking into the consideration the enormous moral and material potential of The Russian Orthodox Church by the end of the 2010s, we can assume that The Church has every opportunity to expand its social service in the future.
Keywords: Russian Orthodox Church, social service of the Church, charity in Russia.

Intra-Church processes during the implementation of parish reform in the first half of the 1960s

In the article the author describes some important components and features of Church life in the period initiated by N. S. Khrushchev of parish reform, which, among other things, was aimed at undermining the financial base of the Russian Orthodox Church (further-ROC) in the USSR. It is noted that Stalin's post-war system of state-Church relations had a serious defect in the form of ineffective legal consolidation: in addition, after the end of the war, the need for loyalty to Orthodoxy and other religions disappeared. All this allowed Stalin's successors to carry out a number of serious measures aimed at weakening the Church. Khrushchev's religious policy differed from the persecution of the 1920s-1930s, because it included measures aimed at indirect destruction of Orthodoxy, primarily through administrative pressure on the clergy and laity. A typical manifestation of this trend can be considered a parish reform aimed at depriving the abbots of financial powers and transferring them into the hands of Church elders, appointed, in fact, by local authorities, which allowed to ruin churches and monasteries with the formal toleration of the regime.
Keywords: religion in the USSR, Russian Orthodox Church, parish reform, Khrushchev's persecution of the Church.
