Cossacks in establishing relations of the Russian Empire with Africa
In the last third of the XIX century. the world experienced a period which historians call the New Imperialism. The struggle of the colonial powers for the few parts of the land that had not yet been divided between them was intensified. Their rivalry in Africa was especially acute, having received the name "race for Africa". Abyssinia was practically the only independent country of the Black continent. The attention was drawn to her and Russian political circles, who saw in the inhabitants of this country "brothers in faith." Attempts to establish ties between the Russian Empire and Ethiopia were of a different nature: from the adventurous to the military-diplomatic. A significant role in the implementation of these attempts was played by the Cossacks.
Keywords: colonialism, New imperialism, Africa, Ethiopia, Cossacks, military and diplomatic mission.

Terek Cossacks in 1917: consolidation or disintegration
The article discusses the socio-political processes that took place in the Terek region in 1917 the Author also analyzes the processes of transformation of the bodies of the Cossack self-government from July to December 1917 Along with this research investigates the causes of the rise of socio-political struggle, etnobotanic contradictions between the Cossacks and the mountaineers. In autumn 1917 the division of the Terek region into Cossack and mountain parts was finally fixed. The new power structures, it took only nine months after the February bourgeois revolution to lead the region to a complete political collapse, to spur its dismemberment, failing to create strong, active governing bodies that United it. The author concludes that in the Terek region against the background of the loss of political influence by the Terek Cossack army the Soviets of workers', soldiers 'and peasants' deputies, in which the leading positions are gradually occupied by the Bolsheviks, are rapidly gaining strength. The political amorphousness of the Cossack bodies of local self-government, created after the February bourgeois revolution of 1917, led to the fact that they were replaced by the Soviets as truly democratic authorities, leading the transformative processes aimed at solving the most important economic and political issues of the region.

Suburban forests of Vologda provinces in the land descriptions of the end of the XVIII cent.: dimensions, composition, fauna
Characteristics of the suburban forests of the Vologda province at the end of the XVIII century. is presented in the article. Economic notes to the General Survey were the main source. For land surveyors, the city was a kind of land ownership, so they described it in these sources in the same way as any other country house, that is, as a complex of lands. The first results of the analysis of statistics and texts of this source on the suburban lands of the cities of the region are presented in the article. Forests have been described by several main parameters: the area of suburban forests, belonging to a given dacha, the size, the proportion of the total area of suburban land, the composition of tree species and the animal world. It turned out that in every third city of the province the forests accounted for more than three quarters of the suburban lands, and on average more than 50%. In fact, it was forests (not hayfields or arable land) that were the dominant type of suburban land. This means that forests remained a necessary resource of the urban economy, even in relation to those cities that existed for a long time and had a fairly high level of development of trade and industry. The amount of forest is not related to the level of development of the territory. Suburban forests were necessary for the townspeople, and not for the peasants of nearby settlements and villages. These forests were predominantly wood. The composition of the animals in the suburban forests shows that the degree of anthropogenic impact on flora and fauna remained rather low even for the nearest territory near the city.

The wandering of the spirit in the creative fate of Maximilian Voloshin: the path from anthroposophy to Orthodoxy
The purpose of the article is to identify the main stages of spiritual searches of Maximilian Alexandrovich Voloshin (1877 – 1932), a poet, translator, painter from 1905 to 1932. Studying the published documents we used retrospective and comparative methods. It was established that M. Voloshin, like many representatives of the creative intelligentsia at the beginning of the 20th century, was fond of mysticism. He was, particularly, a member of the Russian Anthroposophical Society. Further spiritual searches led the poet to abandon anthroposophical teachings and come to Orthodoxy as the basis of personal spiritual development and Russian civilization, which was reflected in the works of M. Voloshin. Studying life of this prominent representative of the Silver Age may be useful for understanding the modern spiritual path of Russia.

Labor and economic life in the Chechen Republic. Part II
In July 2019, an ethnosociological study was conducted by the staff of the Center for the Study of Border Regions at the Institute for the Study of Cross-Border Regions at the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, entitled “Labor and Economic Life in the Republics of the North-Caucasian Federal District of the Russian Federation”. During a study in the Chechen Republic, 200 respondents and 10 experts were interviewed. The experts were scientists - sociologists and demographers, lawyers and civil servants. The following aspects of the labor and economic activities of citizens were investigated: the importance of labor, satisfaction with the level of payment, the ability to realize one’s creative potential, as well as intellectual abilities and labor skills, opportunities for expanding one's professional horizons. The attitude of citizens of the republic to such realities of modernity as the need for the development of new knowledge and skills, self-employment, individual and collective work, an extended working day, and overtime work is investigated. Part of the study concerned the issues of gender stereotype of labor, the degree of women's involvement in the economic life of the republic, the impact of maternal employment on the situation in families. The concept of “labor” was considered from two points of view: both as the main source of replenishment of the family budget, and as a way of social and professional self-realization.
The phenomenon of unemployment is considered separately: to what extent it is prevalent in the region, what measures are preferred by citizens to prevent job loss.
