The distinctiveness of the church of Prince Vladimir Equal-to-the-Apostles in Jakarta

Indonesia is a country of diversities, from cultural to religion. The wary mentality to foreign missionary activities which is the result from the colonisations adds its complication. The article aims to show that despite the intricate interaction, the missionary activity of the Russian Orthodox Church grows steadily and predominantly amongst Indonesian. To analyse how the assimilation of local diversities affects the development of the ROC, the article begins by showing how since the beginning of its existence, Indonesian priest implements local culture, tradition, and vernaculars into the missionary activity. The conclusion is that the perceptiveness of Indonesian priests to assimilate Indonesian tradition and values into the tradition of the ROC contributes to an increasing acceptance in Russian Orthodoxy. The assimilation transpires as a result of the adoption of the ‘Concept of the Missionary Work of the Russian Orthodox Church’ which is established in 2013. A proof of the acceptance is the establishment of the Patriarchal Exarchate in South-East Asia in 2018. The author uses participant observation and secondary data analysis as its research methods.
Keywords: mission, Indonesia, Russian Orthodox Church, diversity, Southeast Asia.
