Strategic retreat and military operations of the Russian army in the summer of 1708 – winter of 1709
The article discusses the strategic retreat of the Russian army from the eastern regions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth to the borders of Russia - from Golovchyn to Mogilev and beyond the Dnieper. East of the Dnieper, the Russian army, without engaging in battle, moved north, parallel to the Swedish army, covering the road to Smolensk. At the same time, the advance of the Swedes was held back by local battles, as well as raids by cavalry striking communications and individual detachments of the Swedes. Of particular importance was the defeat of the Levenhaupt corps at the village of Lesnaya, as a result of which Charles XII lost the food and ammunition he needed. Great importance was attached to the defense of towns and villages, exhausting the forces of the Swedes. The experience gained was successfully used in the defense of Poltava in the decisive military campaign of 1709. The Russian command took measures to block possible enemy offensive routes in the Slobozhanshchina. The Swedes hoped to oust the Russian army from the Left–Bank Ukraine and break through to the Belgorod-Kharkov line, but failed.

Terrorism in Central Asia: on the example of the Republic of Tajikistan
In the modern world, terrorism and extremism are regarded as the most dangerous world phenomena leading to global instability and hindering the smooth development of international relations and regional integration. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, religious activity in the Central Asian republics increased dramatically. This region has a border with Afghanistan, which has an impact on the situation in Asia, especially in Central Asia, a consequence of the destabilization to one degree or another of all five Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. While radical Islam and terrorism in Central Asia are widely viewed as the result of outside influence, the emergence of these Islamic groups in Central Asia has also been driven by the actions of governments in the region – fundamentalism has its roots in the authoritarian politics of Central Asia. Since the global "war on terror" began, the Central Asian governments have stepped up security measures and introduced a number of religious and political restrictions to fight terrorism. Over time, the heavy dominance of Islam by the rulers of Central Asia contributed to the growth of Muslim discontent and the inadvertent emergence of popular forces supporting war and terrorism.
In this article, the authors focus on the factors leading to terrorism in the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as on the emergence of several terrorist groups and their motivating power and influence in the Central Asian region as a whole.
It can be concluded that the trend towards terrorism in Tajikistan is increasing as a result of political factors, such as political opposition forces, which make it difficult to implement signed peace agreements after the end of the civil war in 1997. Particular attention of the authors in this article is also given to the analysis of the reasons why some organizations in the territory of Tajikistan were declared terrorist.
Keywords: Tajikistan, terrorism, extremism, terrorist groups, Central Asia.
